Different Ways to Manage a Warehouse

In today’s time of cut-throat competition, it is very important for a company to stay at par of its competitors for its survival.  A company must ensure that all its resources and internal operations are being done in the best possible manner. Moreover, it must come out with new ways and strategies that will help the business grow further. When it comes to manufacturing companies, owners have to make sure that all manufacturing operations are being done in an orderly manner, without any lapse or delay. Warehouses play a very important role in such companies. This is because all the manufactured products, which are to be send to the markets are stored in warehouses. Warehouse managers are assigned in such places to ensure that there is efficient flow of products in and out and that all orders are delivered on time. They make sure all operations are done in the right manner and check if the warehouse is over stocked or not. With so many tasks to do, it becomes very important that managers follow the best practices to balance all the operations.

There are a number of things that should be taken into consideration to make sure that warehouse management and operations are done correctly. Listed below are a few practices that must be followed by mangers to ensure smooth supply chain flow in the warehouse.

Use of proper tools: a warehouse must be equipped with proper tools required to manage all products stored in the warehouse. There are warehouses in India that are equipped with all the necessary tools such as tape machines, razors, knives markers, pallet jack, etc. Be it pallet jacks, hand trucks, stock carts, rolling ladders, banding dispensers, banding cutters, banding crimpers, pry bars, stretch wrap dispensers, tape dispensers or pocket calculators, all tools are available in these warehouses. There are companies that provide manufacturing spaces for lease, and these spaces are well-equipped with all the latest tools, cleaning supplies and safety items required for storage of products, be it of any kind. So, all manufacturers who are looking for a good warehousing space for their company must consult real estate developers who are involved in this business of providing warehouse spaces on lease.

Proper training to employees: availability of all the tools is just not enough. The employees working in these warehouses must also be trained on how to operate these tools. If the employees do not have any idea of how to use the tools available in the warehouse, a well-equipped warehouse will be of no use. In fact, it will be more detrimental as the cost spent on buying these tools will be wasted.
It is therefore important that the company provide proper training to all its employees on how to use different tools. In the past, it has been seen that companies who had not given adequate training to the employees working in the warehouse, have suffered from issues like low productivity, poor quality of goods, safety issues, and a lack of control on the warehouse operations. Lack of training leads to chaotic conditions in the warehouse and has an adverse effect on company’s business. So companies should invest adequate time and money to train all its warehouse employees.

Choosing the right location for warehouse:  a warehouse should be strategically located at a place from where inflow and outflow operations can be done smoothly. It should be close to market areas or places from where transfer of goods can be done quickly. There are real estate developers that have constructed warehouse spaces in Chennai and Delhi at strategic locations, close to airports and railway stations, allowing smooth transports of goods. Manufacturing companies should get in touch with these developers to get the perfect location for their warehouse.

Proper identification of products entering and leaving the warehouse: all packets and should be properly labelled with clearly readable labels. One may also use license plates or signs to identify aisles. This will ensure better identification of products while making the order, during their storage and release from the warehouse. It will also eliminate delay or congestion and will fasten the warehouse operations.

All companies must follow the above practices to smoothen their supply-chain operations.
